My cat cafes book release: Available 9/1/16!

24 Aug

I’ve written a book about cat cafes based on my blog and it will be available September 1! http://www.books.com.tw/products/0010726529?loc=P_002_023

The book is bilingual and includes all the cat cafes on this blog that are still currently in business. At my favorite cafes, I’ve done interviews and included more detailed information about some of the cats. The cafes all have star ratings and are divided up by type so readers can easily find the cafe they want to go to.

Not really a cat cafe

21 Jul

Address:

This was in the second cat cafe book, and I went all the way to Keelung today to see it. Fortunately, I found two other cat cafes on my own to make the trip worthwhile.

They do have one cat, though the owners seemed surprised that I asked about it. They were nice enough to let me go see where it was hiding on top of a refrigerator. I tried to get a picture, but it was too dark. They said it’s always afraid of people. There were no cat decorations, and since it was a bit expensive and I was already going to two other cafes, I just left. It looks like a fine cafe with a specialty in gourmet coffees and French desserts. But I don’t think having one cat that’s always hiding in the back room makes it a cat cafe.

This cafe from the book used to have two cats and now it has three, and they’re all friendly. It has a comfortable atmosphere, with soft but not sleepy music playing, which makes it a good place to read or work.

In the book, there are pictures of 黑比 when she was a tiny kitten. Here’s a picture of a page from the book, followed by pictures of what she looks like now.

DSCN1560With an NT$200 minimum per person, this cafe is a bit on the expensive side, but the food is delicious. French toast is one of their specialties and they also have many other brunch and dessert options. They also have a wide selection of beer. I had banana caramel French toast (NT$160) with an Americano. (NT$120).

This is a popular cafe near Da-an Sports Centre. It was hard to find a seat at 3pm on a Wednesday afternoon, but there was one at the bar. It’s bright with high ceilings and lots of windows. Most of the customers seemed to be groups of university students. I really think the author had trouble trying to fill a second book, because I wouldn’t consider this a cat cafe either. It has one cat, but not much else cat-themed.

The cat is very cute though. He was asleep on someone’s laptop bag when I came in.

Later he moved to a seat where he could look out the window.

They have the usual coffee and tea selections as well as reasonably priced set meals and desserts. I had an Americano and cheesecake for NT$135.

Hours: 11:00-21:30, Closed Tuesdays

According to the book, this cafe has an adorable Persian, but it wasn’t there when I went. The owner said it was taking a day off but was usually there. Still I wouldn’t really call this a cat cafe. It has a nice atmosphere, but isn’t cat themed, except for the picture of the cat in the window and this sticker.

DSCN1163 DSCN1165

It has typical coffee and tea selections on the menu. I had an Americano NT$100. They also have a wide variety of delicious desserts, displayed on postcards. I ordered a 帕瑪森巧克力. I’m not sure how to translate it. The last part is “chocolate” and I think the first part is Parmesan. I thought the white, fluffy stuff on top was coconut, but it did taste sort of like Parmesan cheese. It wasn’t very sweet, and that turned out to be a good combination with the rich fudge under it.

This cafe has a bright, relaxed atmosphere and is quiet enough for reading and studying. I’d also recommend it for the desserts, but not as a cat cafe.

Chamber

Address:

Hours: 13:00-22:00, closed Mondays

This was in the second cat cafe book, but it isn’t really a cat cafe anymore. According to the book, they had one cat. When I asked about it, the owner said that they don’t bring it to the cafe anymore because it’s afraid of people. There also isn’t anything cat-themed about the cafe. It’s in an old building and filled with beautiful antiques.

Their specialty is gourmet coffee, with the cheapest cup at NT$180 and the most expensive at NT$350. That’s for a rather small cup; a pot, which is about the size of a typical large coffee is about NT$100 more. But while the price does seem excessive, they do make sure it’s the highest quality coffee. They explain where the beans came from and what kind of flavor they’re supposed to have. For each cup or pot, the beans are freshly ground and brewed. I had a “Bliss of Gaya” from Sumatra (NT$180) and also a tiramisu (NT$150). For a cheaper option, they do have tea at NT$120, but that seems like kind of a waste to me since the main point of this place is the coffee.

They also have a small, old-fashioned hair salon in one section. I thought the barber’s chair and accessories were just for decoration, but they said someone still cuts hair there! I didn’t ask when or how much it is.

While this definitely isn’t a cat cafe, it might be worth visiting if you appreciate high quality coffee and antiques.

Cuckoo’s Nest

Hours: Every day 每天 13:30-00:30

This cozy cafe has a great atmosphere: warm lighting, comfortable seats, nice variety of decorations and good mix of background music.

At first, I thought they just had this one cat

DSCN0091That was ok, it was still a nice cafe. I looked at the menu and ordered the most interesting sounding item, a hot “Whatever” for NT$120. That meant I’d get whatever they chose to make for me.

“Whatever” was delicious. It turned out to be a latte with cinnamon and honey.

I paid my bill, but then the guy asked if I’d like to see the cats. He’d seen I had brought the cat cafe book and had been taking pictures of the one cat. He said they had more than 30 cats upstairs! So of course I said I wanted to see them and they were adorable. All of them are strays that they’ve taken in.

This is definitely on my list as one of the best cat cafes.
