A friend brought me to this Banqiao pet cafe. They’re a bit more dog-focused in that people bring their dogs there and the cafe’s own dogs are out in the dining area while the cats are shut in a separate area. But they do have lots of adorable cats and the main cafe dog, Hook, is very sweet.

DSCN5286

Hook was a stray and he was very thin and weak when they found him, so they named him Hook in hopes that he would be tough someday. He did become beautiful and healthy, but his gentle personality is nothing like the legendary villain’s.

The cats are in an enclosed area and can be seen through the glass. Some are temporary residents of the pet hotel and others are ones that the cafe owners have decided to adopt or are putting up for adoption.

They had two very young kittens that they had rescued and were thinking of putting up for adoption, but they’ve decided they are probably going to keep them.

There are lots of cute decorations around, some cat and dog-related and other just interesting, like this collection of Mr Potatoheads

DSCN5267

DSCN5284The menu has a good variety of set meals. I had chicken meatballs and rice that came with black tea (NT$240). I didn’t notice it on the menu but later saw they had cat beer on display.

DSCN5282DSCN5274

This is another one of the cafe’s dogs who was cute and friendly.

DSCN5318 DSCN5311

Some customers brought their own dog and it pooped on the floor. At least they did clean up after it quickly. Customers’ dogs are also required to wear diapers to prevent some ‘accidents’. (Below is just an example of the diaper from a dog in the downstairs pet hotel area).

This is a nice cafe and the pet hotel looks good clean, lots of space for the dogs and very clean.

(Taipei Main Station, exit R1)

Phone

Minimum cost per person: NT$100

This cafe just opened this month. It isn’t exactly a cat cafe, but they will have cats sometimes. They’re still worth visiting because of what they do for stray animals. The cafe is located in a traditional old house near Taipei Main Station. The owners’ grandmother left them the house and she had always helped stray animals, so they wanted to continue her work. They will temporarily take in stray animals and customers can adopt them. We were greeted by the dog waiter, the only permanent resident.

DSCN5207They did have a cat, but it had just been adopted that day. With the cafe’s popularity, it seems that pets are being adopted quickly, which is great. The cafe is very busy and reservations are recommended.  The furniture is old-fashioned, in keeping with the style of the building.

The menu is very cute and includes the story of how the cafe started. There’s also a page where you can order dog food. 3% of all profit from the cafe goes to help stray animals. I had a ‘burrito’, really more of a wrap sandwich, that came with salad, fries and black tea (NT$240). It was pretty good. The menu is simple, with only a few meal and drink options. This is a nice place to visit and a good way to help stray animals.

This tiny cat cafe has just one cat, but it also has cute cat-themed decorations and cat books. It’s about halfway between Dongmen and Guting and is in an alley just across from Old 98, the cat bar.

This cafe is more of a cafe with a cat rather than a cat cafe, but the cat is cute and friendly and worth visiting. The cafe is in a traditional old building and has indoor and outdoor seating on two floors.

The cat was stretched out in a box at the back of the cafe, but he was happy to be petted.

DSCN5136DSCN5137

The menu has a good variety of brunch and lunch options. Rebecca ordered a salmon omelette (NT$200) and I got a double mushroom ‘burrito’ (NT$180), which was actually a pita. We also both got berry smoothies which were huge and had lots of real strawberries and blackberries in them.

DSCN5143DSCN5144

The cafe also sells postcards and other gift items, although most aren’t cat-related. It has wi-fi and outlets, so it would be a good place to work or study.

This was the third cat cafe of the day. It’s in a very busy area and even though it was almost closing time when I got there, there were more customers than at the other cat cafes. The entrance fee is SGD$15 for an unlimited amount of time and this includes a soda. The cats were very interested in my backpack.

DSCN5105 DSCN5107The cats here all used to be stray cats as well. I didn’t have as much time here and didn’t talk to the owners, so I can’t say as much about it as the others. There are lots of cat trees around and all the cats seemed friendly and happy.

This cat cafe was Singapore’s first, opened about a year and a half ago. All of the cats were rescue cats, and the owners selected them carefully and took several months making sure the cats were adapted to living together in this environment. Coincidentally, this cafe’s name means Cat Garden, the same as the first cat cafe in Taiwan (貓花園). Entrance costs SGD$12 per hour and $5 for every half hour after that; ordering drinks or desserts is optional. All of the cats are beautiful and friendly. They have an introduction to the cats there and also on their website: http://www.catcafe.com.sg/cafe-cats/.

DSCN5091

My favorite cat was the cuddly, playful Brown Monkey Brown Monkey:

DSCN5072 DSCN5090I also really liked Baloo, named after the bear from the Jungle Book, who may be the biggest cat I have ever seen. He really looks like a bear!

DSCN5074

And this little white one, Emma, the smallest is adorable too–all of them are!

DSCN5081

I had a black coffee since I was planning to stay up all night at the airport; their specialty is hot chocolate and I’d like to try that if I go back.  It was nice to talk with the owners and see how much they care about cats. They started the cafe in memory of their cat who died of cancer, and they want to use the cafe to promote adoption and to educate people about cat care. If you visit Singapore, I’d recommend visiting this cafe!

I went to Singapore for a day, and when I found out there are now cat cafes there, I had to go to a few. Cat cafes are new to Singapore, and The Company of Cats has been open for one year now. They have eleven beautiful, friendly cats, all of whom were rescue cats. On entering, customers have to take off their shoes and wash their hands. Entrance costs SGD$14 for the first hour and includes a water or soda. For a small additional fee, this can be upgraded to a coffee or tea drink. Every additional half hour costs SGD$5. To go into the cat room, you get a badge like this one

DSCN5025The bright, comfortable room has plenty of places for the cats to climb and play, and there are cat books and boardgames for the humans. I’d never seen ‘Catopoly’ before, but I noticed the second cat cafe I went to also had it.
